Creatures of Aquilar - Maori or Demon|
Aquilar's Current Date:
The term demon is a human term for the danarin word, Maori, which literally translates into “bringer of strife”. More often than not the term Maori is used exclusively to describe these despicable beings whose ultimate purpose is unknown, but appears to include the destruction of the mortal realms and at the very least causing strife in the lives of mortals and immortals alike. Their origins lie along the same lines as those of mortals, having been created by the fallen celestial Baelor in his effort to build an army strong enough to conquer the heavens. Over time, different species of demons evolved to fill the ranks of Baelor and bring the war to the heavens and the mortal realm, having varying powers and abilities suited to their tasks. It is not known whether or not demons have a specific realm in which they call their ancestral home, since there are many different types of demons. Demons can inhabit almost any realm, being extremely durable and of course, supernatural creatures, but are generally considered to live in realms that are inhospitable to most humanoids such as scorching desserts, fiery volcanoes, deep underground, or in the icy grip of a glacier. Most sages agree however that the realm of the Maori is in fact the former home of the fallen celestial who created them, commonly known as the “abyss” or “hell” to humanoids, but also commonly called Baelor in honor of their fallen creator. It is a realm of chaotic extremes where blistering and desolate desserts can turn into a wasteland of ice or where violent, hurricane like conditions meets the calm steadiness of a void. Maori are immortal in the sense that they do not age, but they can be killed as other mortals can be, but it is not known what happens to their infernal souls once this happens. From what is known about their origins, demons are spawned out of the very elements themselves, bursting from a cocoon Many scholars believe that to slay a demon in the realm of Baelor is the only way to truly kill a demon and destroying their bodies in any other realm simply sends them back to the abyss to be resurrected as another demon. This is true for all but two of the species described below, as there are demons that were not created in Baelor. Demon society is loosely based on a series of obscure and misinterpreted laws made at the whims of their rulers to the detriment of the lower classes. Lower classes of demons are seen as merely a means to an end and are expendable as their lives mean little to their masters. Because of this caste type of system, any disobedience by a demon of a lower class is punishable by torture or a swift death. There are different classifications of demons described by various sages and sorcerers over the millennia and it is thought that there are many more that are as of yet, unknown. Following is a simple breakdown and more complete description of these classifications.
